Researcher
Principal researcher - Leonardo Ferreira
Dr. Leonardo Ferreira is the principal reseracher of the MSCA-PF project INTSURFACE at FEMTO-ST Institute. His research comprises active acoustic metasurfaces, wave control, uncertainty analysis and machine learning-based control. His work focuses on wave propagation in metamaterials, noise control, and the development of innovative acoustic solutions.
Dr. Ferreira holds a PhD in structural engineering, specializing in structural health monitoring using ultrasonic waves, machine learning, and numerical modeling. His doctoral research included a 12-month research stay in Lisbon as part of a joint PhD program. He completed his master's degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on mechanical vibrations and acoustics applied to aircraft flutter analysis. Prior to his current fellowship, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at FEMTO-ST on a collaborative project developing machine learning control strategies for electroacoustic absorbers.
His interdisciplinary background bridges structural dynamics, acoustics, and computational methods, combining expertise in distributed wave systems, experimental and theoretical acoustics, and advanced control algorithms. Dr. Ferreira has authored multiple publications in high-impact journals and has six years of teaching experience in mechanical and aeronautical engineering at FUMEC University in Brazil. He has also contributed to the design and construction of the CEA-311 Anequim research aircraft, bringing practical engineering experience to his research activities.
